IEEE Citation Format Guide for Beginners

The references in this style can be divided into three main parts:

  • First, the author's first name followed by a full last name.
  • Second, article title, institution or patent and conference paper in quotation marks
  • Third, the title of book or journal in italics

It is the main attribute of IEEE citation that a reader can have a basic idea from where the information was retrieved; just at first glance. The citation style differs in case of a journal article, news article, book, or video. It can also be made within text usually known as an in-text citation. I am writing down some examples from which a student can understand the format and pattern of this citation.

Citation examples for printed books

  • First, you should write the name of the author followed by the book name in an italic, printing press, and year of publishing.
    • For example W. K. Chen, Linear Networks, and Systems. Belmont, CA: Wadsworth Press, 2003.
  • If you want to cite a specific chapter of the book, then you will write the author of the book with the name of a chapter in inverted commas, name of the book in the italic, city where the book was published, and year of publishing with page numbers at the end.
    • For example E. D. Lipson and B. D. Horwitz, “Photosensory reception and transduction,” in Sensory Receptors and Signal Transduction, J. L. Spudich and B. H. Satir, Eds. New York: Wiley-Liss, 2001, pp-1-64.
  • For a technical report first you should write the name of the author followed by the report title with the institution name, the country where it was published with the date.
    • For example, K. E. Elliott and C. M. Greene, “A local adaptive protocol,” Argonne National Laboratory, Argonne, France, Tech. Report. 916-1010-BB, 7 Apr. 2007.

Citation for Journal Articles

  • In the case of an academic journal, first write author name (an essay writer can write multiple names too) then the title of the article, journal in which the article was published in italic, the volume of the journal, date of publishing, page number followed by the year.
    • For example, K. A. Nelson, R. J. Davis, D. R. Lutz, and W. Smith, “Optical generation of tunable ultrasonic waves,” Journal of Applied Physics, vol. 53, no. 2, Feb., pp. 1144-1149, 2020
  • If you want to cite a monthly periodical then you should write author name first followed by the title of article and journal name in italic with page number and publishing date.
    • For example, J. Fallows, “Networking technology,” Atlantic Monthly, Jul., pp. 34-36, 2007.
  • For daily, a weekly newspaper, and magazine articles first you should write the author's name, the title of the article, name of a magazine in italic, page number with date published.
    • For example, B. Metcalfe, “The numbers show how slowly the Internet runs today,” Infoworld, 30 Sep., p. 34, 2006.

Citation examples for Internet Documents

  • For an official website first, you should write the name of the institution, the title of article or video, serial number, website link followed by date accessed.
