A strong thesis statement is found in many types of essays. It can be a debate speech, an advertisement, or even a closing argument given by a lawyer in court during his closing arguments. But, in most cases, we see that a thesis statement is the main part of writing an essay. Whenever I write my essay, I often get stuck while making a thesis statement. Without an effective thesis statement, all of my arguments often failed. Therefore, I am always curious to learn how to enhance my thesis statement as per the topic of it. It is very important to consider what you are writing as your thesis statement.

Let us consider the following tips in order to write a strong thesis statement for your essay.

Understanding the concept of thesis statement

Your thesis is the main idea of your essay. This is the statement that summarizes your topic and shows what position that you have taken with respect to the topic. The reader can simply read your thesis statement to get the main idea behind your essay.

Determine your kind of essay for your thesis statement. It can belong to one of the following categories:

  • An analytical paper breaks down an issue or an idea into its component parts, evaluates the issue or idea and presents this breakdown and evaluation to the audience.
  • An expository (explanatory) paper explains something to the audience.
  • An argumentative paper makes a claim about a topic and justifies this claim with specific evidence. The claim could be an opinion, a policy proposal, an evaluation, a cause-and-effect statement, or an interpretation. The goal of the argumentative paper is to convince the audience that the claim is true based on the evidence provided.

If you are writing a text that does not fall under these three categories (e.g., a narrative), a thesis statement somewhere in the first paragraph could still be helpful to your reader.

The Qualities of a Solid Thesis Statement

When you are writing the thesis statement, you should consider the format and other qualities in your essay like your position in the essay, its length, and the strength of your argument.

A thesis statement can either be long or short. It all depends on how many points you want to convey in your essay. Normally, it is a single sentence that has two clauses: one clause is your opinion and the other is the reasons behind it. It is often advised by paper writing service providers that your sentence should be at least two lines that consist of normally thirty to forty words.

A thesis statement always belongs at the beginning of an essay. This is because it is a sentence that tells the reader what the essay writer is going to discuss. Teachers will have different preferences for the precise location of the thesis, but a good rule of thumb is in the introduction paragraph, within the last two or three sentences.

Finally, for a thesis statement to be strong, it must be easy enough to generate sensible arguments. It is a statement that is not obvious and it is not something that is taken as a true statement by the majority of the readers.

Your thesis statement must be able to hint at the counter-argument statement that your essay is trying to convey. In the end, ask yourself what kind of counter-argument can be generated against your findings in the essay. A strong thesis statement should be able to contain the generation of as many counter-arguments as possible.
